Meet Sinyee Phan

 A Healthy-Lifestyle Role Model

Home base: Marietta, GA

Family life: Mom to three boys in 8th grade, 10th grade, and a sophomore in college

Work life: Accounts manager at Caduceus

Age: 46

Sinyee Phan enjoys being active. She incorporates activity into her daily life by going to the gym, walking, cleaning the house and doing yard work. She goes to the gym three times a week and walks for an hour once or twice a week while her kids are at tennis practice.

Sinyee has formed a circle of friends at her gym, Lifetime Fitness. She’s been going there for 11 years and says that her gym friends keep her motivated and they hold her accountable. If she doesn’t show up one week, her friends will make sure she knows they noticed her absence. Socializing while working out keeps her routine fun and the kickboxing class she takes feels more like a party than exercise. But, she says, it’s still a grueling workout that keeps her fit.

What’s your go-to gym workout?

“My favorite class is kickboxing. It’s a fun atmosphere, like you’re at a club, not the gym. I love the music, the instructor and socializing with the people who always go. My friends at the gym keep me accountable and motivate me to show up.”

What time of day do you walk?

“I can’t stand the heat, so I walk in the early morning or late in the evening. One of my favorite places to walk is at Leita Thompson Memorial Park where there are miles of shady trails.”

How do you get your steps in?

“My boys practice tennis a few times a week. I use that time as an opportunity to take a walk on the trails behind the tennis courts. It’s a shady area that is pleasant for walking. I talk on the phone or listen to music. It’s a great way to relieve stress and take time for myself.”

Top 3 ideas to get your steps in:

  1. Use the time when your kids are at practice to take a walk.
  2. Clean your house — vacuuming and mopping gets you lots of steps.
  3. Walk in place while watching TV.
